How can we work together to redesign the spaces we live in every day? As part of the Generation Europe – The Academy network, the local group from Florence has taken a practical approach to this question.
Together with other young artists, they carried out a collective experiment in public space that reflected many local realities: through free labs and creative workshops, they transformed the space in and around the Casa del Popolo di Settignano into a special meeting place. The venue is a social and cultural community centre with a long democratic tradition, making it the perfect starting point for this form of do-it-yourself urban development.

The event was an opportunity to design, create and take care of shared spaces. It also served as preparation for an even bigger event: in September, the activists are planning to transform an entire street into a real community space.

Working together for the strongest impact
The activities of the local youth group in Florence, organised by our project partner Centro di Creazione e Cultura APS, are a good example of how many activities in the Generation Europe network are linked to other civil society projects and actors. The project is supported as a part of Transistor.city, a network of local hubs in Italian cities and the Europe Direct Firenze 2025 funding programme. Transistor brings together people in their communities to find and implement solutions for a more sustainable and equitable future. Together, they develop plans to improve existing projects, launch new ideas and take the necessary steps towards a more sustainable city.
