Portugal: Celebrating Human Rights Day

Youth Coop, the local project partner of Generation Europe – The Academy from Agualva-Cacém in Portugal, held a remarkable event to mark International Human Rights Day. The young people of the local group organised a GenE Fest to showcase their work, and our unique network of European youth cooperation.

Encounters, community, extraordinary experiences: As a highlight of the day, the young people set up an escape room. In the adventure puzzle room, participants were able to get up close and personal with the compelling story of Chinese activist and journalist Huang Xueqin, who is known for her work in the #MeToo movement and women’s rights.

In September 2021, Huang Xueqin disappeared together with another activist without explanation. It was only confirmed months later that she had been arrested by the Chinese authorities. According to a group of supporters, the two were charged with “subversion” in September 2023. Published screenshots show that Huang is accused of “publishing distorted, provocative articles and speeches attacking the national government on social media”, and “gathering overseas organisers to participate in online training for ‘non-violent actions'”. Her health is said to have deteriorated significantly. By transforming research on a current human rights issue into an escape room experience, the youngsters exemplified the challenges faced by people fighting for fundamental rights around the world.

Campaigning Against Discrimination

To promote their current campaign, the young activists also held a serigraphy session, in which posters showing the campaign slogan “Quem Muito Julga Não Ajuda! Discriminação Não é Ilusão!” were created. This translates to: “Those who judge a lot do not help! Discrimination is not an illusion!” In the session, the participants were able to personalise their own posters.

Of course, there was also some well-deserved time to talk, exchange ideas and play games. Bottom line: The GenE Fest not only succeeded in raising awareness for human rights issues, but also in fostering a sense of community and a shared commitment to positive change through local activities. All thumbs up and congratulations!
