Act Local, Connect European, Think Global!

Times are tough, but together we can make a difference! Local youth groups from 14 European countries have declared 4 to 11 October 2024 as their European Action Week. Under the slogan „Act Local – Connect European – Think Global!“, they are organising events, street actions and other activities for democracy, sustainability and social inclusion.

The projects that the young people have planned are diverse, but based on a common ground: They enable youth participation and are committed to positive change. For example, the local group from Marseille (France) is hosting a series of events to raise awareness of pollution and climate change at the Mediterranean Sea. In Gdansk (Poland) an eco-festival is being organised, while actions against discrimination will take place for example in Barcelona (Spain), Budapest (Hungary) and Munich (Germany). Some of the youth groups are campaigning for improvements and equal opportunities in the education system, while others are presenting podcast projects to promote understanding between the generations and different parts of society. Peer-to-peer education also plays an important role: The local group from Ploiești (Romania) is inviting other secondary and high school students to workshops about active citizenship.

This commitment is made possible by a unique alliance: Generation Europe – The Academy is an international network of youth organisations and a funding programme for European cooperation, coordinated and implemented by the International Association for Education and Exchange (IBB e.V.). More than 40 organisations from 14 European countries are involved. They work together in trilateral partnerships to enable social participation – regardless of origin, parental income and previous success in the formal education system. The partner organisations are supporting the local groups in which young people are encouraged to develop local action plans to make a difference in their communities. At international youth encounters, the youngsters support each other in their local projects and take the problem-solving processes to a new, European level.

During the European Action Week, young people raise their voices and take action: in their local communities and across all boundaries. Together, we are contributing to an active and inclusive European citizenship.
